Larry Joe Doherty Marches with Prairie View A&M

Doherty joins in student protesters’ historic step

(Hempstead) – Democrat Larry Joe Doherty marked the first day of early voting by joining thousands of students from Prairie View A&M University in a seven-mile march to protest Waller County’s refusal to place early voting machines on the Prairie View campus. The march represented the latest step in an historic struggle to protect and expand the voting rights of students living in the county.

“It means so much that Larry Joe came and marched every step of the way on behalf of students like myself,” said Evelyn Woodard, a Prairie View senior majoring in Computer Engineering & Technology. “I believe this shows he cares for us and it shows he’s determined to stand up for our rights. If he’s here now, he’ll be there for us all of the time.”

Outside he Waller courthouse, Doherty explained why he felt it was important to complete the entire route.

“This march symbolizes a very important step in the history of our state,” said Doherty. “Today I saw young people making history by standing up for justice. You don’t get respect until you walk the walk. These young Americans walked the walk and voted the vote. Today, these folks earned the respect of everyone.”

Doherty committed to continuing to fight in the U.S. Congress for the rights of every voter in the 10th District.

“Community leaders here, such as Justice of the Peace DeWayne Charleston, have been working hard to get the Justice Department to stand up for the Constitution in Prairie View,” said Doherty. “It’s time for the delays to stop. Today the students of Prairie View took action. Now it’s time for these young men and women to have a Congressman who will actually fight for them, and hold Washington accountable.”
